Having been in teaching for close to ten years, I came to realise that profiling plays an important yet under-utilised role in our education landscape. Schools have been advocating differentiated instructions as a framework for effective teaching, and in order to achieve that, teachers would conduct a pre-assessment to determine the students’ understanding or skill prior to the lesson. While diagnosis tends to be largely academic in nature, I believe that understanding the profiles of both the teachers and the students can play an equally crucial role in the pre-assessment stage. This is where profiling tools come in.

The profiling tools that I have experimented with are the MajorsPTI, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the Emergenetics Profile. With the acknowledged merits and the huge following for the four dichotomies under the MBTI and MajorsPTI instrument, notwithstanding, the Emergenetics Profile stands out to me as a clearer (and perhaps more relevant) model in the context of education. The thinking attributes, together with their specific colour codes, aids in the ease of assessing the thinking preferences of different individuals. The behavioural attributes give an added dimension to how we can perceive students to react when absorbing or sharing information. After undergoing the Emergenetics Profiling workshop, I gained a renewed perspective of how differentiated instructions can be achieved in class. Not to mention an arsenal of teaching strategies to address the various behavioural traits of students, especially in the area of Expressiveness.

The potential of this instrument is great, not least in the Junior College context where the Emergenetics profiling can play a part in a student’s choice of subject combinations as well as allowing teachers to gauge better the internal dynamics of groups in the Project Work module. But with all teaching aids available in the market, teachers must first be open to the avenue of study. And with more awareness of how profiling works, I believe it can be a valuable stakeholder in education.

STEP is an insightful program based on Emergenetics theory that inspires the educational community and students to transform the educational experience.

Inspiring Learning

We are taking education to new heights with STEP. To inspire learning, we begin with understanding what motivates each brain to learn. The STEP Thinking and Behavioural Preference Report is a concrete tool that allows teachers to have an enhanced understanding of each student. Teachers use this insight to create energised classroom activities that make learning more productive, fun and sustainable. Schools are reporting that student understanding of self and tolerance of their classmates creates a positive environment for learning. STEP can be directly related to improving skills such as Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration and Creativity.

Impacting Education

Educators are using STEP to establish a common language and a culture of appreciation. Team performance, leadership and collaboration tools are being applied to enhance communication from the central office to classrooms. Educational leaders are using the Thinking and Behavioural Preferences as a template for their professional and strategic development meetings. STEP has gained tremendous headway in the United States and is beginning to transform classrooms and impact education around the world.

Emergenetics is a measurable, proven way to recognise and apply thinking and behaviour patterns people use regularly. They were identified by reviewing research from a wide body of academic literature covering personality, psychology, and neuroscience. These results were then subjected to rigorous statistical analysis.

On a practical level, the Emergenetics Profile represents a clear framework of seven easily recognisable and useful factors that apply to work, communication, and interpersonal relationships.

Using the Emergenetics model, STEP provides individual and classroom insights for teachers and students. STEP enhances student understanding by providing a more informed approach to student learning.

Student Benefits

Ultimately, this allows students the ability to capitalise on their insights to build self-esteem, understand their motivational drivers for learning, build appreciation and tolerance for others and improve academic performance.

The Emergenetics Model
The Emergenetics Youth Report

Students receive a colourful one-page summary report in an easy-to-understand format. The report provides students’ thinking and behaviour preferences in seven research-based attributes, allowing them to better understand themselves – how they think, communicate, and learn – and their interactions with others.

The STEP questionnaire is geared specifically for students ages 10-18, and is normed by both gender and age to uniquely identify preferences compared to the general population.

Teachers and Administrators

We believe that great teachers and administrators intuitively understand the needs of a classroom or staff. STEP Student/Teacher Emergenetics Program helps educators combine intuition and the art of teaching with the science of research. Furthermore, STEP also offers an adult profile, and the training necessary to better understand their approach to education.
